REMINDER: PUBLIC HOLIDAY (Independence Day) MONDAY, JUNE 9 |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Did you know?
The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in the Philippines, where Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo (later to become the Philippines' first Republican President) proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonial rule of Spain after the latter was defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. The declaration, however, was not recognised by the United States or Spain, as the Spanish government ceded the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris, in consideration for an indemnity for Spanish expenses and assets lost.
While the Philippines first celebrated its Independence Day on June 12, its independence was only recognized on July 4, 1946 by the United States. Hence, Independence Day was observed on July 4, but in the name of nationalism, and upon the advice of historians, Republic Act No. 4166 was signed into law by President Diosdado Macapagal in 1964, proclaiming June 12, which up to that time had been observed as Flag Day, as Independence Day.

MEMBER RECOMMENDATION : Seamstress |

Submitted by Celina Maxwell
Teresita has been sewing for me for a few months and is an excellent seamstress and a very nice person. While she has her regular customers, with so many people away over summer, she will have some free days. She sews in your home 8am to 5pm for P900 per day, but you need your own sewing machine or to borrow a friends. You need to provide her with lunch and morning and afternoon snacks - my maid takes care of this. You can contact her on ph: 851 0097 in the evening, as she is usually at her clients during the day. |

|
| |
|
|
| |
Submitted by Anna Durie (who has enrolled in the classes)
Barbara C. Gonzalez, columnist for the Philippine Daily Star, is offering writing classes. Made up of eight sessions, the 'Joy of Writing' classes will help you find your own voice, teach you to be more creative and make you a better writer. You don't have to know how to write. All you need is a desire to become a better writer and pen and paper.
Cost: P8,000 for the entire course, payable in full in cash on the first session. After that you can make up whatever classes you missed in future sessions at no charge.
When: A Saturday class starts June 14 - a few places are still available.
However, if there is a group of at least five people interested, Barbara will start up a new class on another day (and can even come to your home!).
For further information, or to enrol, email Barbara at lilypad@skyinet.net or secondwind.barbara@gmail.com or text 0917-8155570. |

All-Rounder
This is the one you've been waiting for, so close to perfect you'll wonder how you ever got along without her. Edit Gemao, a helper who's been working for us for 2+ years, doing everything from ironing to cooking to organizing closets, possesses a long list of superlative qualities. She's dependable, smart, has good English, is trustworthy and full of initiative and motivation. And she's a good supervisor, attentive in overseeing workers coming to the apartment for repairs or odd jobs, and making sure the job is well-done and the fee charged is fair. Never idle, she finds new places to clean and things to do. One of her more sterling qualities is her personality – she whistles while she works and has a wry sense of humor. I could go on and on: call me if you want to hear more on 0919 279 0500 or 818 5252, or text Edit directly on 0919 836 9468. She's available for Monday-Wednesday-Friday, starting July 21.
Driver
Felix, who's been driving for us full-time, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, for 2+ years, is the consummate professional driver. Proud, attentive, thoughtful and traffic savvy, he is always on the spot. He's never been late and seems to live in a constant state of readiness. Before driving for us, he drove for 20 years for executives of the Union Bank of California in Makati, so knows every route, back road and traffic pattern in the city. He keeps our car spotless, and, for maintenance and repairs, steers us to the shops offering quality workmanship for reasonable prices. Felix is available after July 15. Call me on 0919 279 0500 or 818 5251, if you want to hear more, or text Felix directly on 0916 743 9008.
