LAUNCH OF NICANOR ABELARDO GRAND PIANO PROJECT - June 20
| |
| |
To celebrate the centenary of the University of the Philippines, the University's Jorge B. Vargas Museum presents the launch of the Nicanor Abelardo Grand Piano Project, 20 June, 6pm, at The Lobby, University of the Philippines Vargas Museum.
As part of the launch of this residency project of Australia-based artist Alwin Reamillo, invited students from the College of Music will play selected pieces to highlight the musical legacy of Abelardo, considered as the first modernist composer in the country.
The Nicanor Abelardo Piano Project involves the sourcing of disused or second hand pianos and their transformation into modified art case pianos. The project will follow the conceptual framework of the recently completed Mang Emo+ Mag-himo Grand Piano Project currently on exhibition at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Western Australia. The pianos will be developed as a conceptual portrait/instrument/object of National Artist Nicanor Abelardo, who wrote the first piano concerto in the country and pioneered the research of traditional musical forms. Using mixed media, the pianos will celebrate the life and work of Abelardo and his musical journey as a composer.
For more details on the Nicanor Abelardo Grand Piano Project, please contact the University of the Philippines Vargas Museum on 928 1927 (direct line), 928 1925 (telefax) or email vargasmuseum@gmail.com
